Can we save the fireworks?

So I'm sitting here on Sunday morning reading the New Haven Register website about how IKEA and other businesses have come together to save the local fireworks.

Can we do something similar in Middletown?

The fireworks were nixed at a Common Council meeting in May, and this is expected to save $65,000 in the budget. That includes overtime paid to police and other city employees as well as the actual cost of the display.

In New Haven, the fireworks will be moved from Long Wharf to East Rock Park, which will cut the costs since less security will be needed and fewer officers will have to direct traffic and close roads.

What can be done to cut the costs of the Middletown fireworks? And who could be asked to sponsor them, or part of the event?

Maybe Weslyan would step up and help salvage the fireworks. Could we do them on the rivver and have Portland share some of the cost and make it a joint fireworks display

I believe that the $60,000 expense to the taxpayers is not worth the investment return. If this brings in revenue to the local business establishments, let them salvage this display by pooling their resources, or have surrounding towns in the county share the cost.

Thank you for all of your input on the fireworks discussion.

We spoke with the mayor's office on Friday and they told us that even if we were able to pool together a group of business sponsors, it would probably be too late to rent the barge, etc. However, since the fireworks are likely to be cut from the following year's budget as well, we here at the Press will start to work on a plan for next year's fireworks.
