A tour of Wesleyan University
Last week, Managing Editor Lauren Flaum and I tagged along on an undergraduate admissions office tour of Wesleyan University.
We didn't realize, of course, that it would be the hottest day so far this year, and that the tour would last 2 hours.
It was interesting, though, to hear the story of the secret bell-tower society, find out where the best food is on campus and take a look inside the old library.

The Mystical Seven (M7) at Wesleyan is part of the 7 phenomenon which includes 7 in religion, 7 in sports (with many famous athletes pictured and quoted), in history and pop culture.
The Mystical Seven is a society first founded at Wesleyan University in 1837. The Seven Society was started at the University of Virginia in 1905 and at the University of Missouri in 1907. The University of Virginia’s Seven Society boasts several university presidents and Admiral William Halsey as former members. Members make donations to their alma mater with 7s, including one gift for $777,777.77.
Subsequent Mystical Seven organizations have been in existence for years at the College of William and Mary, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at East Carolina University.
Ravid Chowdhury served as the 177th Wesleyan senior class president
and as an officer of the Mystical Seven—also known as the M7. He
mentioned that his cell phone number ends with 77, his mother was one
of 7 children and several friends of his in M7 have ties to the powerful
number 7. Ravid is proud that M7 has a rich history of service and was
the first fraternal organization to admit women in the 1840’s. M7 once
brought Ralph Waldo Emerson to campus. Famous M7 alumni include
U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Brewer.
