Some changes here at the paper

Those of you following Publisher Dan Moriarty's blog may have noticed that it mysteriously disappeared Tuesday afternoon. His name was also taken off the masthead on our editorial page and replaced with the name of New Haven Register Publisher Ed Condra.

It was the same day the Journal Register Company, our parent organization, announced a round of layoffs under the new CEO.

Three senior vice president positions - one for each of the large JRC clusters in Connecticut, Philadelphia and Michigan - were eliminated. Instead, three senior publishers who already work for the company will oversee those clusters.

"The actions we are taking today will streamline our reporting structures so that ideas, decisions and their implementation and resources will flow more freely," said CEO John Paton in a statement to employees Tuesday afternoon. "These changes are fundamental to the way in which we will approach our business going forward. Now each of the local cluster leaders will be accountable to and for their employees."

Four publishers of smaller newspapers in the company were also laid off as part of the plan - the publisher of The Middletown Press and West Hartford News one of them.

"Our company needs to invest in more resources in the field and less in management oversight," Paton said. "We need more feet on the street and we need to empower our employees and managers in the field to make the best decisions for their divisions and their communities and to be able to do it quickly. We must become a much more flexible and less top-down organization than we have been in the past if we are to succeed."

The New Haven Register publisher now overseeing us is set to take over the Philadelphia cluster in about two months. Then, it will be announced who the new senior publisher of Connecticut will be (That publisher will oversee The Middletown Press when Ed Condra leaves).

Whoa, so sorry about the lay off. I wish the best to Mr Moriarty. It so saddens me when I see the small town newspapers fade away. I was raised on the 'real'papers (sorry about this but I was raised in a different era of newspapers) Everyday I read The Middletown Press and the hartford Courant. The family discussed the days news at the dinner table. I don't know what to make of these changes in journalism. I do know it isn't a good thing. In fact I believe it to be a very bad thing for individuals, and the country as a whole. The bottom line is money. I maybe be wrong but reading between the lines it seems the little guy is being scr*wed over once again and a few are making more money while claiming it is the... best thing, the good thing...and 'adapting' the news to their personal agenda and wallets? I may be wrong but this smells bad and I wish you the best. You are a young group of people. I see this in the vids you post. You are doing a fine, even great job and have good/great potential. My humble opinion. This is one tough country these days. Don't let the e*ff*rs get you down. As Lauren ( my adopted cyber daughter, though she doesn't know it)would type..."You ROCK" Once again, my best to Mr Dan, lol the ascot man. Sardonica

Thank you.

Hopefully, we will not "fade away" but instead find ways to be stronger.

One of the things we are going to explore in the near future is more participation from readers and better ways of communicating with each other.

Keep leaving comments for now to let us know what you all think about our product, what we do and how we could do it better.

Hey Vic

Pretty neat trick when 40+ comments get wiped out about a female cop being stalked. Maybe because the comments contained enough of the truth. Strange how her name wasn't printed, but the male cop Angelo Pasanessi was all but hanged in the paper, and not one comment removed. Great double standard you have there.

The female cop is a victim in this situation and she was not named in the story, nor do we allow her to be named in the comment sections, which is why the comments were removed.

With the Passanisi situation, the cop in question was accused of a crime. One victim in that story - the person who turned him in - was protected from being identified and we removed all comments online from people trying to "out" that person.

Ms Editor,
Sorry to bother you again but I can't seem to get a post in the book or photo blog. I am trying to use the OpenID thing but it doesn't seem to 'stick to the page'. Any ideas? This is Anonymous Sardonica

Sometimes you have to hit "preview" first, then a code pops up that you can type in and hit "post comment."

The code is supposed to show up automatically, but it doesn't always do that.

Alright, I just tested it and I couldn't comment either on those two blogs. I've changed the settings now so you should be able to comment easier.
