Editorial conference

My head is spinning from discussions and presentations at an editorial conference in Philadelphia this week. What will news look like in the future? How do we move our company forward? What does a newspaper need to do in order to survive in this quickly changing climate?

Tomorrow afternoon, I am going to make an attempt to present a compact version of what I learned to my staff with the hope of getting everyone on the same page. Perhaps there will be a blog entry about those ideas later. For now, here's a video clip from our guest speaker, author and journalist Jeff Jarvis. He speaks about links and the value of links on our Web sites.

Viktoria: I appreciate your head spinning. You have tough job. I have a saying "Life is dynamic" meaning, things change thus nothing is absolute. Years ago, and not that many, a newspaper was a "just" a newspaper. You bought it and you read it. Today, the Middletown Press is a newspaper ..... and more. The fact that I am able to read it and instantaneously respond is something that is quite novel in communicating information. A few years from now it will be ho-hum. In addition to news print we now have videos, Wow, who would have thought?

With this new age one can be informed 24/7 anywhere in the world. Great for people who want to keep informed by the Middletown press that don't live here. But, this also means that Middletown residents, who use to turn to the local newspaper, now have ability to bypass the local paper and log-on to other news sites to get information.

It is clear that you have to stay ahead of the readers and continue to provide things that are only available here.

More people would respect your paper if you would stop the tabloid journalism. Have your reporters do some digging to get the facts and report them in a truthful manner. Get rid of the annonomous blog postings where readers spew hate and slander, it just serves to lower the standards of your paper. Tabloids twist events and news to satisfy one goal and that is the monetary bottom line. Please stop lowering yourself and the Middletown Press to that level. Be a newspaper not a cheap take off of the Star or National Enquirer.
